Safety & care

Smart, not scared.

Most people you meet are genuine and a bit nervous too. A little planning lets you relax and enjoy it.

Before a first date

A short checklist.

It is always okay to leave. Your wellbeing matters more than being polite.

  1. Chat in the app first and get a feel for each other. Swapping a quick video reply to each other is an easy way to check someone is who they say they are, without sharing your number.
  2. Keep your surname, home address and workplace private until you have met and feel comfortable.
  3. Meet somewhere public and busy, in daylight if you can. Not your home, and not theirs.
  4. Tell a friend where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be home. Message them when you are on your way.
  5. Get yourself there and back. Drive, or book your own ride, so you can leave whenever you like.
  6. Trust your gut. If something feels off, you can leave without giving a reason.

Scam red flags

  • Pushes for personal details early
  • Pressures you to move off the app straight away
  • Has a story that keeps changing
  • Avoids meeting in person or swapping a video note
  • Asks for money, gift cards or financial details for any reason, however sad or urgent the story

Never send money or gift cards to someone you haven't known for a long time in real life. Report romance scams and learn more at Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au).

Report and block in the app

If anything worries you, use Report or Block on a member's profile or in a conversation. Reports are private. Blocking stops that person contacting you.

Go at the speed of trust. Someone who is right for you will respect your pace.
